More Information

We stock two types of  Navitron Intregated Thermosyphon Solar Water Heaters Both types work on the principle of natural thermosyphon i.e. hot water rises and cold water sinks. In both systems cold water in the tank naturally sinks into the vacuum tubes where the sun rapidly heats it. This hot water rises into the top of the tank where it can either be drawn off directly to your hot water taps. (Gravity Feed Systems) or the heat is transferred to the mains pressure system via a copper coil (heat exchanger) running through the tank (Mains Pressure Systems).

The evacuated vacuum tubes are the innovative element of both systems Constructed of two layers of brosilite (pyrex) glass with a vacuum between them. These tubes are remarkably resistant and built to withstand 35mm hailstones (we actually experienced such a hail storm here in Almunecar in September 2007 and although our car window screen shattered our Integrated System survived) The vacuum tubes are coated with a selective coating which allows nearly all the suns radiant energy in and very little out. In fact over 80% of the suns energy is transferred to the water. Once the water is hot the vacuum comes into play acting exactly the same way as a thermos flask reducing radiant heat loss to an absolute minimum. The cylindrical nature of the tubes also means that they naturally track the sun in other words maximum surface area is always exposed regardless of the suns position in the sky .

The tanks on both systems are well insulated and in our experience down here in Andalucia there is very little radiant heat loss even over night.

Obviously in order to guarantee a permanent hot water supply some sort of back up is necessary. Both system types can take an electrical immersion heater that can be set to turn on whenever the temperature drops or alternatively main pressure systems can be rigged in parallel with a gas combi boiler via a temperature controlled junction point (important check with your combi boiler manufacturer that it can except pre-heated water)

The water temperature in the tank can get very hot and sometimes even boils This is not a problem but we do recommend, to avoid scalding, that a thermostatically controlled mixer tap is fitted between the tank and domestic hot water supply.

Mains pressure systems offer several advantages over gravity feed systems in that due to their closed circuit nature there is very little limescale build up and reduced thermal shock as no cold water mixes directly with the hot, water quality and pressure is the same as mains supply so they can be installed below point of use which gives more flexibility in installation position and thus benefits from maximum solar radiation.
